At Blue Mound Graphics, we like to focus on the importance of community. Whether it’s the community-building calendars we produce, our small team, or the service work we do as a company, our focus is on strengthening community.
We want to introduce you to other organizations making a difference in our community—the greater Milwaukee area.
This is the first installment of a series highlighting three local groups doing good work. All three fill crucial needs in Milwaukee and deserve a shout-out! Our team members visited all three facilities to learn more about each organization and presented each with a donation to further their mission.
Tricklebee Café
Tricklebee is a pay-what-you-can community café that serves a healthy, plant-based lunch four days a week. According to the mission statement on the website, the café “seeks to be a peaceful gathering place in a neighborhood that has experienced violence and neglect.”
A Little Background
Our crew recently visited the Tricklebee Café. We had the pleasure of meeting Rev. Christie Melby-Gibbons, Tricklebee’s executive director.
She showed our team around the beautifully homespun café while sharing her inspiring story. Born in the Midwest. Her ministry took her to California, where she started hosting an “open table” event. It offered a weekly meal where community members from all walks of life could come together in fellowship. Christie adored this part of her ministry so much that she wanted to make it her life’s work. So she packed up her family and moved to Milwaukee to start Tricklebee Café.
Meeting Needs
When a local grocery store closed in the area, it widened the food access gap. Tricklebee responded by adding a community-powered fridge (pictured here). When the café sees a need in its neighborhood, it acts!
Since opening in November 2016, the café has served over 120,000 meals.
Congratulations to Tricklebee Café as it approaches its 10th year of strengthening the community!
Additional Services
The café doesn’t just serve delicious meals; it also offers food service training to people seeking to start a career in the field. Tricklebee relies on many volunteers. These volunteers include, among others, farmers who drop off their abundant produce; kitchen and front-of-house staff; and those who help with gardening on the small lot next to the building and tend the hydroponic garden in the basement.
It takes many hands to provide “fresh, healthy, locally-grown food to anyone regardless of ability to pay. Access to healthy food helps people to better care for themselves and their neighbors, which heals and strengthens community. “(Vision Statement, Tricklebee website).
Thank you, Tricklebee!
The café is located near 44th and North Avenue in Milwaukee. We encourage everyone to stop by and see firsthand the great work this amazing, community-loving organization does in the Milwaukee Sherman Park area.
Thank you to Rev. Christie Melby-Gibbons and everyone at Tricklebee for all the work you do! We know our donation will be put to great use.
Drop in for a delicious meal, a tour, or to lend a helping hand.
